Two educational units developed by Dr. Rana Babaç Çelebi—Ottoman Perfumery and Alchemy of Scent—are now available through the IFEAT Academy, the educational platform of the International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades (IFEAT).
Designed for an international audience of producers, perfumers, traders, product developers and fragrance professionals, the courses explore the historical foundations of perfumery while connecting them with contemporary practice and today's fragrance industry.
Alongside the launch of these courses, Dr. Babaç Çelebi is also featured in an in-depth interview published by IFEAT, where she discusses Ottoman perfumery, the cultural heritage of scent, and the role historical research can play in shaping the future of fragrance.
"For me, the past is not a decorative reference. It is a research archive for the future of scent."
Drawing on more than a decade of research in the history of medicine, perfumery and aromatic plants, the courses present scent history not simply as a historical narrative, but as a source of knowledge that continues to inform raw materials, craftsmanship, cultural understanding and innovation.
By bringing together manuscripts, laboratory science, botanical knowledge and contemporary perfumery, the programme reflects a broader vision: that history is most valuable when it helps us better understand and shape the future.
I am grateful to the IFEAT Academy team for the opportunity to contribute to a platform that brings together professionals from across the global fragrance and essential oils community.
